Lymphoedema presents as a swelling of a limb or other body parts when the lymphatic system is not functioning normally. Your Occupational Therapist (OT) has an important role in managing Lymphoedema.

Firstly, your OT will conduct an assessment of your affected limb(s) and seek to understand how your daily life is impacted by the Lymphedema you are experiencing. Your OT will provide treatment of your affected limb (s) through bandaging, manual lymph drainage, specific exercises, skin care and/or compression garments. These treatment options aim to facilitate the movement of lymphatic fluid back towards the heart to stop and prevent it from pooling in a certain area in the body.

Your OT may provide you with knowledge regarding Lymphedema and any potential complications you may face. The aim of this education is to empower you to self manage your swelling and be aware of any changes to your symptoms. Through working with your Occupational Therapist, you may find problem solving strategies to allow you to maintain or increase your independence in daily tasks.
